Virtual Parks & Recreation Service

Second Life is so large now that I know I’ll never see every sim and every build. Like everyone else I rely on recommendations, profile picks, and random exploration to bring places that I might enjoy to my attention. There aren’t very many resources that I know of which try to winnow the data into a useable collection of places of interest, but an old one that has been reborn just recently is doing just that. The old SL Parks and Recreation Service, reborn as the Virtual Parks and Recreation Service, provides a free service to residents looking for greenspaces, activities, and places of interest.

Started by Higbee Protagonist back in ’03, the registry, kiosks, and website are being reworked and updated with listings for the bazillion excellent builds around now, events, and free camping gear. If you are the owner of a place that should be on the registry please submit your location. Remember – this includes recreation, not just parks. There are benefits to being included in the registry, not the least of which is that your location can be more easily found.

Why the name change? After a bit of consideration it was decided that being limited to one version of virtual reality makes no sense. In order to reflect the decision to leave the way open for developments and changes as yet unseeable, the service altered its name. Take a look at the website, visit a few places, recommend additions, join the VPRS supporters group, get involved – or just watch the registry grow and be aware that it’s available for you to use, and that it is growing and changing rapidly.
