Gambling In Second Life

Pirates Cove

So I’m looking at this slot machine, and wondering about gambling in SL. It’s illegal, don’t ya know. Yet here’s this store selling slot machines.

You know what? Who the hell is the law to tell anybody how to have a good time anyway? Good on ’em, I say… I should review a good casino sometime soon. Any suggestions?

  1. I can see both sides of the argument.

Against? It’s basically a tax on people who can’t do math. Even with Vegas regulations to ensure the occasional payout, the house always wins in the end. The only way to SUCCEED at gambling is to be a numerical genius, and then, they kick you out because you’re succeeding. We have enough problem with addictions to alcohol and drugs, do we want to freely encourage addiction to gambling, getting stuck on the hope that you CAN win when in the end, you really can’t?

For? We’re all adults here, we should be allowed to do whatever we want. It’s also hypocritical to ban gambling with allow state lotteries. Just make it clear and open across the board and ensure regulations so people have a chance to win, even if the long term odds are bad, and let it roll.

In terms of SL, it’s that last bit that’s the problem — chance to win. There’s not regulatory commission in SL. There’s no proof that these machines aren’t rigged to keep you losing and losing and losing without even a sliver of hope. And given a lot of free users see casinos as a way to Make Money Fast (instead of BUYING Lindens or building things, both of which help grow the community) they’re also a drain on the world’s potential resources, building up a select few megacasino owners while churning zero benefit for the rest of the world.

When you boil it down… I’m not against casinos right to exist. But the legal tangle, the “blight” on the landscape and mentality of SL, and the wild and unrestricted odds… they add up to casinos in SL sucking.

I’m glad I’m pulling up stakes and fleeing the mainland to a private sim soon. I’m tired of casino ad towers everywhere.

  2. use a good odds counter to gamble for winnings in second life!
